Sera and the Strange
Creature
A short story by Sophie Cunliffe
Sera was 10 years old.
You could say she’s quite the tall type. Her eyes were as dark as night, her
hair as magnificent as a pack of wolves. She’s the thin type. Her dress was as
swift as the calm river, her body was as delicate as a china doll, and her face
was as gentle as a butterfly. She had just moved from Liverpool to Plymouth. She
lived in a house right next to Drake Circus because her dad had just become the
new manager.
The house was huge -
you’d be able to fit an elephant in the house - believe you me it was huge.
When they moved there Sera found that when you shout in the rooms it echoes
thoughout the whole house. The garden was humongous and it had a big green
hedge. In each corner of the garden there were beautiful red, blue and white
flower beds. Right in the centre of the garden was an old rusty wishing well but
there was nothing in it.
The next day, a
beautiful sunny day, Sera decided to explore the back garden. She went to the
well to see if there was anything in it, but there was nothing there except an
old silver whistle. Sera leaned over into the well and stretched to grasp the
slimy whistle. She stared at it wondering if she should blow it. Cautiously
lifting the whistle to her mouth, she stopped and thought to herself, will it
taste revolting? She took a deep breath and blew the whistle. Then something
amazing happened. An old yellow brass door appeared in the centre of the garden.
She saw there was an old golden key in the keyhole which she twisted with all
her might. She opened the door with a creek!!! She went though the door and
suddenly fell into a hole. She landed on a soft feathery bed. Looking around,
she felt really scared .
She looked around
again, more closely this time. She was in somebody’s house. She knew it was not
her house because her house was not under the ground. Then she heard a sudden
crash from the kitchen - CRASH!!!!!
Sera stood by the
kitchen door. She saw on the wall opposite was a photograph of something that
looked like a horse but with a horn. The funny looking horse had a sparkling
blue coat of sapphires. The creature had an amethyst coloured mane, and the
hooves of the creature were a deep dreaming pink . Then she hard a big BANG!!!
from the kitchen once again. She peered around the corner of the door and then
she saw it - the strange looking horse. It was the exact same creature as in the
photograph . Suddenly Sera stumbled over the carpet. The strange horse heard the
BANG! “Who’s there ?” it said. “I’m terribly sorry for trespassing but you see I
was exploring my garden and I found this whistle and I blew it and then this
door appeared I opened the door and I fell and then I found my self here” she
said rather too quickly.
“Come and sit down”
said the creature. They both made friends. “My name is Sapphire, what is your
name ?”
“My name is Sera.”
“That’s a pretty name.”
“You have a pretty name
too.”
Later, Sera and
Sapphire decided to take a stroll in the woods. The woods had magical golden
leafed trees. The ground was very firm. The sky was empty - Sera had never seen
a sky so blue, no white, fluffy clouds just a clear blue sky. When they were
both strolling along they saw a peculiar rock shaped as a fairy, but what Sera
and Sapphire did not know was that there was a stone. Suddenly Sapphire tripped
over the rock and smacked her head. Her horn snapped and disappeared into the
distance. Screaming with terror Sapphire had lost half of her horn.
Screaming in agony
Sapphire begged and begged Sera to go beyond the forest and go and find Pixy the
fairy who is always sitting on the red and white polka dot mushroom. “You have
to find her before sunrise, or I’ll turn into dust.” So Sera ran heavily
through the topsy turvy path. Pushing herself through the hanging willow leaves,
she could see Sapphire getting smaller in the distance. She got to the polka dot
mushroom, but the fairy was not there.
“Oh no, I’ll have to
go back and tell her she’s not there.” But when she got back the fairy was with
Sapphire. Pixy was telling Sapphire what she would do to help her. She had
brought a strange bowl with her.
“Sera, you have to make
me cry” said the fairy. “O.K.” replied Sera. She stood on Pixy’s foot and one
little incy wincy tear came out of her eyes and fell into the strange bowl.
Sera saw that the bowl showed where the other pieces of the horn were. The
fairy brought the horn to her just in time - “Well done Pixy.” They put the
horn on and Sapphire survived “Whoopee!”
“I’d better get back
now” said Sera.
“O.K” said Sapphire and
Pixy. We will push you back though the hole because it is quite steep. Sera was
pushed back through the hole. Her dad was coming, so she had to act like nothing
happened.
“Come on Sera, I’ve got
a surprise for you. Because we’ve never really understood each other I have
decided to take you on a shopping spree,” said dad.
“I’ll be there in a
sec,” said Sera. She looked at the hedge. As she turned her back she heard
someone say “Come back Sera come back we miss you.”
But who was it ?…
