Jake and Fred the Squatch

A short story by Connor Collins

Jake was nine years old, tall and thin with jet-black hair, which looked s silky as a horse’s mane. His eyes were as blue as the sky and as sleek as a skyscraper. He had to move house because his old house was too old and falling down. His new house had a huge overgrown garden.

Jake wanted to help his dad clear out the attic in their new house and was sad when he said no, so Jake ran into the garden. He thought the trees needed cutting down so he ran into the garden shed and got an axe. When he chopped one very prickly, smelly tree down he saw it was covering a small rusted circular door. He bashed it softly at first with an axe but it did not move so he smacked it into a big long hole that was as black as coal. Jake slid down it and hit the rusty door at the bottom.

Jake found a big brown door and knocked loudly on it. Suddenly out JUMPED Fred the Squatch. He was really slimy and dripped all of his slime on Jake. Jake was so terrified he jumped up. Fred asked Jake if he wanted to come into his house and have a look around and have something to drink. Fred the Squatch showed him some pictures of himself and his friends. He took Jake outside and exploring in the hole. Jake saw a slow worm and then they roly polyed down the hole to Fred’s door. Then they went inside to see Fred’s bedroom.

Fred’s body was covered in slime; he needed it to be, so that his skin didn’t crack. But as they had spent so much time in his bedroom it had started to dry out, so when he caught his leg on the edge of his bed, it split open and red blood ran out of it. “I need to get my slime back quickly, so can you call the Red Tongued Devil Bird?” asked Fred. So that is what Jake did.

The Red Tongued Devil Bird came and made a potion with toe and finger nails, a small horn, 1 hair, 5 spits and 6 bogies from his eye balls. He only had 1 day before he would shrivel up and disappear, but luckily they saved him just in time. He got his slime back and Jake and Fred went out and played to celebrate.

While they were playing, Jake’s dad called him in an excited voice. Jake wondered who was calling him and quickly said bye to Fred and ran up the hole. He went in the house and tried to find his dad. His dad said “Do you want to go and play with the new football?”

“Yes please”.

As he was playing football Jake wondered if he would ever see the Red Tongued Devil Bird or Fred the Squatch again.
